Lead Sheet: I Lift My Hands

I Lift My Hands - Song History
Words & Music Key Eb
Dennis Jernigan
October 8, 1986

This song came in the early days of my first experience of leading times of corporate worship. While the lifting of the hands may not seem like that big of a deal today, that simple gesture of surrender was like a monumental moment of freedom for so many. I remember the first time I lifted up my hands publicly. It was when the Lord delivered me at that 2nd Chapter of Acts concert on November 7, 1981. My heart was set free and my hands became a simple extension of my heart. I was so grateful that it seemed silly to not lift my hands in surrender and thanksgiving. In fact, I could not lift them high enough. This song came a few years later as I was trying to help others get to that same point of freedom found only in Christ. Everything I am and have is simply given to me to bring him glory. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Lift up your hands to the sanctuary
And bless the LORD.
Psalm 134;2 NASB

Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'
Mark 12:29-30 NASB

Verse 1

I lift my hands given to me
Holy, acceptable worship to Thee

Truly my hands, Lord, were given to me
For the sole purpose of worshiping Thee

Chorus

It is a good thing to thank You
A good thing to praise

Good, Lord, to love You
The rest of my days!

Good, Lord, to know You
So good, Lord, to be
Holy, acceptable worship to Thee!

Verse 2

I lift my life given to me
Holy, acceptable worship to Thee

Truly my life, Lord, was given to me
For the sole purpose of worshiping Thee

Chorus

It is a good thing to thank You
A good thing to praise
Good, Lord, to love You
The rest of my days!

Good, Lord, to know You
So good, Lord, to be
Holy, acceptable worship to Thee!

Bridge

You are exalted! Exalted! Exalted!
You are the Lord of my life!

You are exalted! Exalted! Exalted!
Lord God Almighty on high!

Verse 1 repeat

I lift my hands given to me
Holy, acceptable worship to Thee

Truly my hands, Lord, were given to me
For the sole purpose of worshiping Thee

Chorus

It is a good thing to thank You
A good thing to praise
Good, Lord, to love You
The rest of my days!

We're all holy, acceptable worship to Thee!
