I Will Think On This

Song History

In early 1993, I was feeling a deep stirring in my heart and needed a break from all the mental turmoil I was in. At that time, I had served at a church for 8 years as God taught me how to walk in my true identity. In my heart, I knew something needed to change - that perhaps I was being called to spread my wings and fly. Reality was that I was still struggling with pleasing others and performing for my affirmation and Father wanted me to stand on the firm foundation of who He is and who He says I am. Soon after, I asked to take a sabbatical to rest my mind ... and that sabbatical was granted. It was during this time that I realized I still had strongholds - lies I was believing - concerning my identity. I was led to meditate on Philippians 4:6-8 and the Lord gave me this song as a personal go-to song to do battle for my mind and thoughts. The lyrics have been altered slightly from the original to make them appropriate for everyone in every situation of mental battle. I still sing this song today and it has anchored my mind on the truth of God’s Word in an unforgettable way. May it be so for you.

Be careful [anxious] for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:6-8 NASB

Verse

Whatever is true;

Whatever is honorable;

Whatever is righteous;

I will think on this.

Whatever is pure;

Whatever is lovely;

Whatever is good;

I will think on this.

Chorus

If there is any excellence,

Anything worthy of praise,

I will set my mind on this,

Praising God in all my ways!

I'm taking my thoughts captive

To the obedience of Christ!

Casting down imaginations,

Replacing truth for ev'ry lie!

Verse

Be anxious for nothing,

But in ev'rything by prayer,

With grateful thanksgiving

Let your requests be known to God.

And the peace of God which passes

All human understanding

Will guard your heart and mind

In Jesus Christ our Lord.

Chorus

If there is any excellence,

Anything worthy of praise,

I will set my mind on this,

Praising God in all my ways!

I'm taking my thoughts captive

To the obedience of Christ!

Casting down imaginations,

Replacing truth for ev'ry lie!

Chorus

If there is any excellence,

Anything worthy of praise,

I will set my mind on this,

Praising God in all my ways!

I'm taking my thoughts captive

To the obedience of Christ!

Casting down imaginations,

Replacing truth for ev'ry lie!

Whatever is true;

Whatever is right;

Whatever is good;

I will think on this!

Whatever is true;

Whatever is right;

Whatever is good;

I will think on this!

Whatever is true;

Whatever is right;

Whatever is good;

I will think on this!
